My in-laws have a place on a tiny little lake in Michigan. It’s big enough for wake boarding etc but it’s just one up and back. We go up once or twice per summer. They have a pontoon boat, I bought a canoe and a couple kayaks as the lake has a bunch of little off chutes that you can explore with smaller boats.

I was thinking about a little sunfish/laser sailboat. I haven’t sailed since my scouting days, but I could handle a small boat for sure. I came across this seemly cool larger sail boat !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! but it’s a good bit more than I planned on spending...I also don’t know what I’m talking about, that was purely “ooo that looks cool and is significantly cheaper than I would have guessed.”

Which brings me to my next thought...

Kinja'd!!!

I’d be going used and looking to spend 3k or less, that realistic?

Situation:

House is on the lake with a garage where I would be storing said watercraft. I could “hand wheel” a trailer to the water. I’m not afraid of turning a wrench on a marine engine, however the number of wrenches at this house is from 0 to not enough...Obviously that could change too, but it’s not a small amount of tools I’d need to fee l comfortable tearing apart a marine engine.

So oppo, take sips pinky out on the sailboat , or go full Kyle on a j etski (or much more likely, a waverunner) ?

If sailboat is your answer, what is are some good resources for purchasing a used one? I’m not having much luck..

Check out the Jimmy Skiff II - It can be used as a row boat, a sailboat, or attach a small motor to turn it into a little runabout! https://www.clcboats.com/shop/boats/powerboats/Jimmy-Skiff-II.html

That’s how I found out about these guys. I periodically go through phases where I want to buy or build a small camper and stumbled upon it one time. There’s a great YouTube series where some dirty hippies build one.

Also, they are only about an hour away from me . They are actually on the way to my grandparents old house, I’d probably passed by them a million times.  If I ever get around to building one of their trailers or boats, I’ll probably go up to their shop to check out their operation.

I feel this is a staple of being a hardened car enthusiast. I do the same thing and have seen similar posts from others.

What lake? My parents and grandparents used to have places on a lake in Southern Michigan and I remember there were a ton of other small lakes around there

If you want a ski, there is ZERO reason not to just buy a brand new Spark. Super long service life, and you can get them out door with a trailer at the end of the season for like $5500.

“I only own dead car brands” post earlier about Opie and Meg got me inspired. I’m going to put a trailer hitch on my Volvo 240 wagon.  I had been considering it anyways, but now I’m convinced.  I could pull a small boat with it, or a small camper.  Apparently Volvo rates those things to pull 3500 lbs, which is the same as our Terrain.  My biggest issue is space to keep stuff like that, I have a small yard and limited garage/street/driveway space, and I’m loathe to take on a recurring payment to store it somewhere.

It’s in Brooklyn MI. I will ask my wife what the lake is called

Yep, ours was in that area! We were on Deep Lake, it’s just south of the Speedway

Samesies on Space. One lane driveway 4 cars with a car-tent at the back... That is hopefully changing soon but waiting to see how the world goes for a few more weeks.

T here is definitely a teardrop camper in our future. We had been looking at/pretty much decided on a Hiker but this has got me thinking again.

I really wanted a tow hitch for the E34 so I could bring the MG all sorts of fun places, but then I found out a NLA tow hitch goes for 5-1000 so I kinda ditched the idea there

Very cool... good luck!

I watched the build videos I linked at one point when I was hot on getting one, just to see what was involved in it.  The “stitch ‘n glue” method is very interesting, and looks a bit fiddly but not too hard. I don’t remember if they addressed insulating it, but that’s one thing to consider if you plan to camp in colder weather.

Oh yeah, that’s very close! I used to go there all the time as a kid, we’d go to all of the mini golf courses and go-kart places around there

That cat boat looks nice and the price seems nice if none of the wood has gotten wet inside. You can still find something like that for under $3k but you’ll have to do quite a bit of refurbishing, like on this one . If you don’t mind the trip, there are this wee sailing pram and this restored sailboat in St Michael’s, MD.

Since you already have a canoe, have you thought of adding a motor to it? Even a small 30lb trolling motor could drive it nicely.

Ha, that’s pretty funny.  I have plans for a CLC kayak and I want to build my ladyfriend a paddle board.  My father built a couple boats back in the day too.

I would skip the jet ski, but that’s just because the only people I ever see on them around me are full blown idiots who can’t seem to be bothered by any rules.

If it’s a small sailboat you want I would look for a Laser as they are super fun and much faster than a sunfish.  Keep in mind that with a wooden boat there WILL be upkeep every season.

I like the name “ Laser” better anyway! I’m really kind of down with the upkeep which is what turned me on to a sailboat in the first place. Maybe I’ll drive around when we get up there this year and see what I can find.

For sure you could pick up a small sailboat locally, if there are small lakes around. This time of year lots of people put them by the side of the road around here, maybe CL but maybe not. Look for one that appears well-cared-for, you’ll know when you look at a few. Lasers are great, sunfish are also good but more limited in their capability. The ultimate beginner sailboat is an Optimist (“Opti”) but I wouldn’t recommend one for leisure. Then again, a laser isn’t really “leisurely” depending on how you go about it...

The only thing in favor of a jetski is you could wakeskate/wakeboard behind it. But for that, you could just build a winch:

https://www.instructables.com/id/Homemade-Wakeboard-Wakeskate-Winch-From-BeachWinc/

A friend just built one of these that mounts to the trailer hitch of his truck, he’s been backing up to all kinds of ponds, rivers, lakes, where you otherwise couldn’t launch something that could tow you.

I only like waverunners for assisting with surfing in large swells/rescue , otherwise at places like Tahoe I wish they would ban them. They are obnoxious and then these asshats mount massive speakers on them and ride around blasting music too. I love my Hobie kayak/sailboat.

I used to race Lasers when I was a kid, they are easy to rig and easy to sail, fast.

The catboat will be a lot slower than a laser, and lapstrake boats are heavy, which is a factor if you have to wheel it uphill much. Plus there’s a lot of maintenance to keep it looking good, particularly if you don’t use it much - wood boats don’t like drying out.

On the other hand, on a little lake the wind will probably gusty so a high performance boat will be frustrating, and the catboat will be a lot more flexible - row it, fish from it, laze around sleeping in the sun in it. I’d be tempted.

Jet ski meh - it’ll get boring and you’ll piss off the neighbours.

Yeah I’ m on the other hand side of boating haha. These cat boats seem tougher to come by, that listing was from 2010 by the way, lol. I have been looking for similar things but haven’t come up with much
